Higher power limits demanded for 5G networks above 24 GHz

The FCC is engaged in devising rules for the spectrum bands above 24GHz which it has identified for potential 5G use. Many of the debates are about sharing mechanisms for cellular and satellite operators in the 28 GHz band, but another important issue will be power limits for base stations.

Verizon and a group of vendors – Qualcomm, Nokia, Samsung Electronics America, Intel and Ericsson- are calling on the regulator to increase the maximum power levels for base stations from the proposed 62dBm to 75dBm EIRP per 100 MHz.

β€œThe proposed level of 62 dBm results in a much lower spectral density than is achievable in other mobile bands,” the companies wrote in a joint FCC fi
